So now we're onto Thursday, May 26th. We left Edinburgh in the morning and headed off towards the Lake District, which is apparently known, not for its lakes, but for its hills. In contrast, the Peak District is known, not for mountainous peaks, but lakes. I thought that was funny. Despite this, however, we did go for a boat ride on a lake, after driving past beautiful green hills and many green pastures filled with sheep and divided by old stone walls. We drove most of the day to get to Windermere. It had been raining on and off all day, so about twenty minutes into our boat tour it started raining pretty hard and we were eventually forced to stop being stubborn and seek refuge below decks until it stopped and we could go enjoy the sun and look more at the absolutely beautiful sky, water, and hills.
Before it rained, as evidenced by our dry hair.
We then spent some time wandering around the town, trying to avoid the rain before we finally just gave it up and let ourselves get wet. We stopped into some stores, just rather idly passing the time, before we finally went and had dinner at a Chinese restaurant that was somewhat decent. Then we got back on the bus and drove up to our hostel. We explored things there for a while, both inside and outside. I found a book that was all about roses, and was really pleased about that, but we also went outside and explored the forests and glades that surrounded the hostel. We found what we dubbed the council of Elrond off to one side, and we stood in a circle in the drizzling rain and told stories about our childhood in the cool, green woods.
Awesome Elrond chair.
We spent the night at the hostel reading, working on puzzles, and chatting. Normal hanging out sort of stuff. It was really nice and relaxing, in contrast to the night before. But the Lake District was so beautiful! I'm glad that we went.
So green!
And that was Thursday. One more day left on the trip North!
